Medicare Gals: ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

In this episode:
If you have Facebook or watch the news, you may have heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge. This challenge is to raise awareness for ALS, Amyothrophic Lateral Sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

People diagnosed with ALS will experience the loss of their ability to initiate and control voluntary movement. Common symptoms may by muscle weakness and/or muscle atrophy.

Other symptoms include cramping or stiffness of the affected muscles, weakness of an arm or leg and eventually control of the tongue which will cause slurring and the ability to swallow.

Towards the final stages of the disease, the affected person will be dependent on a ventilator to breathe.

If a PCP suspects a patient is developing symptoms, they will refer them to a neurologist who will conduct a series of tests for an accurate diagnosis.

There is no cure and patients may receive treatment for 3-10 years before the passing from diagnosis. ALS is one of the unique diagnoses that will allow someone to receive Medicare A and B without a waiting period.

Medicare requires that you are 65, have been on disability for 24 months or have been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s or ESRD.

We want to be sure that you understand the purpose of the challenge and that so far over $15 Million has been raised for research.
